Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Precious

Every week Linda G Hill gives a writing prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday.  Check Linda out for all the details and other writing prompts. Fast summary. Just write.

I never had a lot of new or expensive items growing up, so when I received something I often considered it precious. Something to put away and save for a special occasion.  You just didn’t use anything precious for daily use! I mean really.  So items of mine and other family members were put away.  It is not until you are moving (if you are lucky) or going through someone’s items after they die that you realised so many things were never enjoyed.  They were put away for that special occasion that never came.

I think we have to redefine special occasion. Breakfast Sunday morning with family is a special occasion. Friends over for a movie is a special occasion.  Going out for dinner is a special occasion. Bring those items out you consider precious and use. Life is a special occasion.  Redefine what precious means and if it is worth not enjoying something now. I think the majority of the time it is. Use it. Celebrate it. We are worth it.

You can always start now!

I totally agree. One of my old aunts taught me to use all my pretty linen and crockery at least once before putting it away – “just so you know that when you die, your husband’s second wife will inherit your pretties secondhand”.

Reading your blog I think you are doing a good job of enjoying life. Next both of us can start looking at what we have in those high kitchen cabinets where we put stuff we don’t use and see what we pull out!

I am trying to not have anything precious. Or I should say enjoy my precious items. Put my mother’s dollies on the table as a runner. Drink out of a China cup. You are right life is precious and sometimes too short not to enjoy.

You are so right, Amelia – we found so many pieces of “precious” china and glassware in my grandparents house after they had died that obviously never came out for that elusive special occasion. What denotes a special occasion for that precious object? Life is too short!! C xxx
