Word Jar

I found this book at the library. The title caught my eye – Journal Sparks: fire up your creativity with spontaneous art, wild writing, and inventive thinking. I mean seriously! That has everything I’d liked to try out! Author Emily K. Neuburger.

The book is colorful with lots of creative exercises. It is divided up into sections: Observation, Invention, Color & Contruction and Wordsmith. She uses every medium from Washi tape, paints, magazines, nature and more. So many exercises to get our juices following. Check the book out.

One exercise I did want to mention was the word jar. Find a glass jar and fill it with random words. Ask friends and family to give you words. Or random strangers. The author uses her word jar for journal prompts and inspiration. Write about it, draw or paint it, use it as the start of a poem or drop into a writing piece. You decide.

Put the word back into your jar and keep adding words.

You can always start now!
