I never had a lot of new or expensive items growing up, so when I received something I often considered it precious. Something to put away and save for a special occasion. You just didn’t use anything precious for daily use! I mean really. So items of mine and other family members were put away. It is not until you are moving (if you are lucky) or going through someone’s items after they die that you realised so many things were never enjoyed. They were put away for that special occasion that never came.
I think we have to redefine special occasion. Breakfast Sunday morning with family is a special occasion. Friends over for a movie is a special occasion. Going out for dinner is a special occasion. Bring those items out you consider precious and use. Life is a special occasion. Redefine what precious means and if it is worth not enjoying something now. I think the majority of the time it is. Use it. Celebrate it. We are worth it.
You can always start now!
