Life Lessons – personal space

I started blogging by accident, but now I can’t imagine not blogging. Blogging has made me look at life a bit differently – could I blog about that? Is this book worth sharing? And of course I love the blogging community. I have finally found my tribe! Thank you.

I have been mulling over an idea for a series on life lessons.  Looking around I am noticing people have less common sense and are not as aware of their surroundings. Maybe because their heads are down and on their phones?

So I thought I’d start a series on my life lessons or rant on what I think people should be learning as they go through the world.  My first lesson is personal space.  Be prepared this might be a bit of a rant!!

We all know the standard unspoken rule of approximately 3 feet between people when talking. I think we have a handle on this.  What I find people are not picking up (or life lesson) on is that there is a whole world around them.  There is only so much space on a sidewalk or trial so be aware of people coming towards you or behind you and go single file to make room for them to get by.  If alone move to the left or right when walking. Do not straddle the yellow line so to speak. Do not have people trying to get by you and having to go on the street, off the path because you are too absorbed in yourself to make room.

When going through a door make sure you are  not letting it swing into someone’s face who is right behind you.  If you use public transit – life does not end at the back door. I have had buses go by me on rainy days as the driver thinks he is full. As the bus goes by I usually see seats and room at the back. Honestly, you will be okay past the back door. It is not the seedy part of town/bus.  I sit there – well maybe that is not a good endorsement.

Life lesson we all live together and there is only so much room especially in certain situations.  Be aware of the people around you coming and going.  Step to the side if you are walking slower, give your seat up on the bus to a senior (better yet do not sit in those seats go to the back of the bus).  Lift your head up more from your phone and look around you. Is there something you could be doing to make life easier for someone else? We are part of a global community – be active in a positive way.

You can always start now !

Enjoyed reading this life lesson. Everything you’ve said I have seen happen. I’d like to add people should also stay off their phones in stores. They stop in the middle of the aisle with their carts and carry on a conversation totally oblivious of others around them trying to shop.
Look forward to the next life lesson.

I work with a lot of international students in my job, and one of the most interesting training sessions I’ve taken was the differences in personal space and communication across cultures. Although I personally much prefer the standard North American 2-3 feet of space, in several Asian cultures, it’s closer to a foot. They didn’t share in my session, but I would love to know how each of our cultures came to our preferred personal space!!

I notice a lot when I travel. Like lines up and people staying to the right when they walk in the other countries way more than North America where we are all over the sidewalk. Do you think it is because we have so much more space here we don’t feel we have to move compared to Europe where sidewalks/streets are narrower? Just a thought that came to me while typing!

I’m constantly amazed how many people are unaware that they are hindering my progress a) down a supermarket aisle b) whilst walking the dogs c) in any given situation whatsoever when I am trying to get to whatever destination I’m either thinking about or (procrastination permitting) actually going for.
Honestly! Some people should be fitted with wing mirrors! 😀

I walk fast so appreciate not everyone is at the same speed. I think my major rant are people walking together that don’t go single file just until you get by. That is the first thing I do when people are behind or coming towards me. Simple awareness that is all we are asking. Thanks for stopping by.

This reminds me about how many people don’t pay attention to the drivers around them either, fail to keep space or use their turn signal as if they are the only one on the road!

In my youth, we were taught manners, sometimes they are all we need. Also a sense of self awareness and being mindful of where we are in relation to people and objects. Love your post go captured it all so well. .
