Book club anyone? The Book Thief

I am an escape artist and my favorite place to escape is a book.  An adventure, a mystery, a drama I can get lost in any of them.  When I find a character I enjoy, well I can take them along with me on any adventure.  Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice) has been to a few interesting places outside of Hertfordshire.

So I thought a book club should be included for us in exploring our possibilities.  A good place to check out book clubs is your local library or start your own at work or with friends.

So first book is….. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.  It made me cry, I don’t have a water retention problem.   The narrator is death which I found interesting and reading the book it made perfect sense to me.  Who else sees all and can relate all.  A quote from death from the book is “the best souls are always light because more of them have been put out.  More of them have already found their way to other places.”  My first thought was I hope at the end I have made a difference somewhere and have a lighter soul.  The quote resonated with me.

At our book club we talked about war, the story takes place during World War II, and have we learnt anything.  The decision was sadly no.  There are a variety of characters to relate to of various ages and having different experiences throughout the book.  One book club member said “most people would get something out of it.”   So, if you want a good read I recommend it.  Do not think of it as a war story but as a life story and how horrific events can bring out the best in people.   If you have already read it let me know what you thought.  Did you like the narrator?  Also let me know any good reads you recommend – winter is coming so curling up with a good book is just the thing.
